Indira Nooyi Success Story

Indian-American Indira Nooyi is not an unknown personality. Whenever there is talk of powerful and successful women, Indra Nooyi’s name also comes up. She has been the Chairperson and CEO of PepsiCo. In 2018, Nooyi retired as CEO of PepsiCo. She was the chairperson of PepsiCo from 2007 to 2019. Indra Nooyi did not get this success just like that. Behind this success is his hard work and dedication. Indra Nooyi has summed up her entire life in a book of 300 pages. The name of this book is ‘My Life in Full: Work, Family and Our Future’. This book of Nooyi is a memoir, in which she has given details of the events from her childhood till becoming the Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo. This memoir has become available in the market from Tuesday.

Where do you belong to in India?

Indra Nooyi was born in 1955 in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. His father worked in the ‘State Bank of Hyderabad’, while his grandfather was a District Judge. Nooyi did his schooling from his birth place. After this, he did higher education i.e., graduation from Madras University. He is a graduate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He has done post-graduation in Business Management from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

Study abroad and receptionist job

In 1978, Nooyi enrolled at the Yale School of Management and received a master’s degree in public and private management in 1980. While studying at Yale, Nooyi also worked night shifts as a receptionist so she could save money to buy a Western suit for her first job interview.

Beginning of career

Nooyi worked in the Department of Atomic Energy in Bombay as a summer internship. After graduation, he started his career with Johnson & Johnson and served the company as a product manager. He also worked with a textile company in Mumbai. He also interned at Booz Allen Hamilton. After graduating from Yale School of Management in 1980, she joined Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where she worked as a consultant for 6 years. After this he joined Motorola, Inc.

When the business suit embarrassed you

When Nooyi was going to America for a job interview for the first time, she did not have any business suit. He spent his entire savings of $50 on a dark blue two-button polyester jacket and matching slacks. She wanted to try it but it was quite uncomfortable for her as she had never used a changing room before. That’s why he didn’t try on his clothes. The jacket seemed big to him but he remembered his mother’s advice that clothes should always be a little bigger.

On the day of the interview, Nooyi discovered that her jacket was actually too big and her slacks were a little small. But now was not the time to exchange clothes. For the interview, she also added a turquoise-colored polyester blouse to this outfit, which had vertical stripes of light blue, blue and dark blue. At the interview place, everyone was laughing at Nooyi, which was quite embarrassing. Nooyi’s interview went well but she was hurt and disappointed with her outfit. He came out of the interview hall crying and talked about his career development.

Joined PepsiCo in 1994

Nooyi joined PepsiCo Company in 1994 as Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development. When she joined PepsiCo, not a single one of America’s 500 largest companies had a female CEO. In 2001, she was made the CFO of the company and five years later, in 2006, she became the chairman and CEO of the company. There were 11 female CEOs in the US in 2006. Indra Nooyi was the 5th and first female CEO of PepsiCo. She was also the first black and immigrant woman to run a Fortune 50 company.

Counted among the best CEOs

Indra is counted among the best CEOs of the new world. Under Nooyi’s leadership, PepsiCo’s revenue increased from $35 billion in 2006 to $63.5 billion in 2017. Almost all of Indra Nooyi’s strategies to take PepsiCo forward were successful. She is considered the architect of PepsiCo’s long-term growth strategy, having guided the company’s global strategy for more than a decade. Indra also led the restructuring of PepsiCo.
